Flock

11:10am IST Tuesday 25 October 2005

I really like flock. It's become my preferred browser over Firefox, which I really liked.

Flock is happy to give me webpages I've seen recently, even if I'm not online at the time. Firefox does not. Flock has blogging software built into its core. Firefox does not. Flock lets me rearrange the tabs. Firefox does not (without an extension) (yet; I know the new major release of Firefox will).

Flock also has an awesome way of handling bookmarks on the top row: I can switch between categories and new bookmarks appear.

Rochelle and Serena are back; their voices are like music in the hostel. I honestly was going to get off my computer and go help Rami, though part of me was thinking of giving a more solid effort on the documents he gave me to see about rewriting them.

I just need to mail the one I wrote to him and then eat and rock over there.

Today

Hung out with Ben a lot today. We listened to some of his tunes and talked about the carpet problem and tried to understand fibbonacci spirals and stuff.

He told me about the ISM training, and about adventures they had there. He and Dave had a chinup competition; Ben showed me the videos.

We had a bit of our own chinup competition, and he beat me hands down. Or.. up.

Ben's a pretty cool cat.

Oh my gosh Flock is getting even cooler!!? And by "getting cooler" I mean I am discovering more features that have been here all along!

I'm writing this blog entry without being connected to the internet.? I wrote the one on Patch Adams, and then carefully saved the text so I could close flock and not lose what I wrote, but then when I open it back up...? the entry is already saved!!!!!

Flock has a local copy of all my blog entries, any of which I can edit and (I imagine) update when I get back online!

Wow!!

I gave Rochelle a bit of a neck rub just as she was about to go to bed. At the end I was like, "thank you for being so tall and beautiful," and she kinda said, "aww" and gave me a hug then went to her room.

Then I noticed in my brain a little thought that said something like she might not appreciate me just complimenting aspects of her that she cannot change.

Went into the bedroom where she is staying.

"I mean 'thank you for being sweet and funny.' I realized I should change it."

And she said something like, "good; it's less offensive."

Yikes stripes! I realized it wasn't the best thing to say, but I didn't think it was *offensive*!! Man; I gotta understand the logic behind that one.

Just saw most of Patch Adams starring Robin Williams.? I was surprised when The Girl died; I saw she was going to have an issue, and wondered how it would be resolved.? How could ol' Patch say "now now; play nice," after the incident, but I guess by killing both involved, it's not an issue.

Kudos to the real Patch Adams for having the courage to be different and silly.

How We'll Get Back to the Moon

NASA - How We'll Get Back to the Moon

This looks pretty cool. I'm intrigued by the cargo and crew launching separately, but I guess it makes sense to keep the crew away from the heavier launch thing. It will be interesting to see how they will handle disruptions in launching the second vehicle. If the first one is in orbit and then the second can't be launched, how long can the first one stay in orbit to wait?

I look forward to visiting the moon myself.

I want to see the alien ships on the far side of the moon!

zzz days old finished!

2:47am IST Wednesday 26 October 2005

I got my daysold code working for all cases of adding or subtracting days to/from dates to see when I'll be that many days old. The code is pretty ingenious, I think, once I finally figured it out. But the real champ is perl.

I haven't even optimized it *at all* and perl whizzes through 99999 / 30 iterations faster than it takes me to notice.

sub incDate {
    my ($year, $month, $date, $add) = @_;

    $$date += $add;

    # now check to see if we went over $month length
    while ($$date > $daysInMonths[$$month]) {
	$$date -=  $daysInMonths[$$month];
	&incMonth($year, $month,1);
    }
    # now check to see if we went under 1
    while ($$date < 1) {
	&incMonth($year, $month, -1);
	$$date +=  $daysInMonths[$$month];
    }
}

sub incMonth {
    my ($year, $month, $add) = @_;
    $$month += $add;
    while ($$month > 12) {
	$$month -= 12;    # if $add put $$month == 15, it will become 3
	&incYear($year,1); # pointer to year, as sent to &incMonth
    }
    while ($$month < 1) {
	$$month += 12;    # if $add put $$month == -2, it will become 10
	&incYear($year,-1); # pointer to year, as sent to &incMonth
    }
}

sub incYear {
    my ($year, $add) = @_;
    $$year += $add;
    &setFeb($$year);
}
