Lunch with Jesse

4:22pm JST Friday 01 April 2005

Met Jesse for lunch in Jiyugaoka. Talked about nothin' and then about him and Takako vs his dad; pretty fucked up sounding situation. His dad doesn't like Takako, which is causing tension between Jesse and Takako. Really unfair sounding stuff.

We played HSJ in a bank lobby area (bank was closed) vs some other girls in a loudness competition. The girls were talking all loud so Jesse wanted to out-loud them. Soon thereafter he cracked out the hackey sack and we got several good kicks in.

His student arrived and I didn't remember ever having met her before, though she says I did, and they went off for their lesson and I came home. Or I am on the way home now.

State of My Life

12:51pm JST Friday 01 April 2005

State of My Life Address

  1. I HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED TO SAIL ON P-B's 49th Global Voyage!!!

I got the news on my birthday, the same day I went to pick up Sally and Kelly at the airport. Oh my god I was vibrating with elation. Woooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

  2. Dude sent me tadalist.com which led me to basecamp where I have set up a free project management project to organize my thoughts as I transition from Millenium House to P-B's 49th Voyage

  3. I'm well on schedule for sending in all the stuff they need; I'm actually caught up until 14 May, though I'll need to read a bunch of stuff they'll send me soon.

  4. I plan to ride TJ Bike to Hakone soon. Probably right after Sally and the gang leave Japan next week. It's only 60+ kilometers according to my GPS receiver, but the roads are steep and curvy.

  5. I have just emailed Mieko to confirm I may stay at her parent's house for a night when I ride out that direction. I don't know how close their house is to the straight-up Hakone area, but, the process has begun.

  6. Had a bit of a falling out with Sally. I didn't like that she bought cigarettes and she didn't like something I did. Or something. But it's all good; We'll both lead awesome lives.

  7. Sally, Kelly and Jasmine went to Kyoto yesterday and haven't come back to my house yet. I hope they are doing well and having big fun!

  8. Millenium House is full, or so the rumors say. Sam from OZ (maybe), a long haired girl from Brazil (who speaks very little English, but helped me with Spanish, (and her husband who I haven't met yet), and a guy from somewhere else who I've not met yet are all new denizens of our lovely building. I'm glad for Elvis, who was running low on cash, having no one in the building.

  9. Just today I snailed some Chinese learnin' books to Bryn, and included a picture in the package. It was wrapped tightly in cardboard and basically resembled a hardback book. A thick hardback book. I wrote on the package PHOTOS ENCLOSED DO NOT BEND. hahah such a riot!

  10. I still live in Millenium House, in Tokyo Japan but my days there are numbered. Like in the 40s. (49 days to be exact-ish)

  11. My computer has lots of pics on it; my chores for today consist of looking at different ways to get the images and music archived before I go go go. I'm thinking I'll be able to transfer stuff from my compuer to Hitomi's and use her DVD burner. That would be cool.

  12. I have been in email touch with Kellie, the tall funny loud woman who lived in Hawaii for her growning up years. She's intent on being on P-B's 51st voyage. I'm sure she'll be able to do it.

  13. I've basically not kept in touch with anyone from Gaba except for Jesse. and it's only been a week or two. Oh, except for Mieko, who I emailed today. But only cause I want to crash at her parents' crib.

  14. The weather is getting warmer; I sometimes venture out without my hat, and the sun is actually warm at times. yay warmer weather!

  15. I'm using gmail as my main email storage. rob@robnugen.com is my address and thunderrabbit@gmail.com is my storage. And, as I'm typing, my gmail storage quota is going up. I think it will be 2000 MB by the end of today.

  16. I have changed my visa status to Temporary Visitor. That means I'm not allowed to work. Unfortunately, I'm unable to buy a JR Rail Pass in Japan. I have to get an exchange ticket outside Japan and then exchange it for a pass inside Japan. Very strict. I wonder if I'll buy a pass while I'm in New York for 3 days in July with P-B.

  17. My only job is at Jen's OM job on weekends. I don't work during the week now. Not even really any private students. My job description and salary have been cut at OM. Only a few quintarks and no data entry.

  18. OM has been absent for the past couple weekends at OM. He's kickin' it in the Phillipines. Jen has been trying to keep the business working; last weekend I helped her figure out what needed to happen to get stuff working smoothly.

  19. My computer is MAC OS X version 10.3.8, with 667 MHz PowerPC G4 1 MB L3 cache and 512 MB SDRAM. HD: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) 27.94 GB capacity and 1.78 GB free.

  20. I never went to help with the tsunami, but I'm pretty much over that. It was too expensive, and now I can help people in a different way on P-B.

  21. I wonder if I can do the next P-B voyage. I wonder why there is no 50th voyage. Only a 49th and 51st. I wonder if I'll want to go on the 51st after I've experienced the 49th, or if I'll want to just sleep or never travel or what.

  22. Right now, I cannot adequately (and by adequately I mean "at all") explain what P-B activities we will do in ports that really help the world be peaceful.

  23. I've written a little cron job that archives my journal entries in the early am every day, then emails them to my trstorage account on gmail. On the 1st, 11th, 21st, and 31st, it emails them to different email accounts on the web. This is all just for backup in case something bad happens with robnugen.com or the US in general.

  24. I am not yet archiving my images in this way.

  25. I seem to be settled with the idea of keeping a beard. During my P-B adventure, I plan to just use Dan's shaver to trim all my head hair to the same short short length. Short for hair, a bit fuzzy for beard.

The woman from Brazil

4:48pm JST Friday 01 April 2005

The long haired girl from Brazil was chillin' on the computer in the living room. I stumbled through a few sentences in Spanish with her (she wouldn't let me speak Japanese with her :-) and then she asked about how to get to a nearby payphone. The old Rob would try to walk with her, but there's really no need for that; and I've got junk to do here. (Like what, I wonder.)

I don't remember her name (she told me last night).

Sam just said her name is Simone.

gmail rules

5:35pm JST Friday 01 April 2005

I'm using gmail as my main email storage. rob@robnugen.com is my address and thunderrabbit@gmail.com is my storage. And, as I'm typing, my gmail storage quota is going up. It was 1000 MB yesterday. It was 1125 MB a moment ago. Now it's 1145 MB. Gmail guys have a counter on the front of their site.

Oh my god, the counter matches my quota.

Gmail rules.

On the front page of gmail.com there is a counter spinning up about 10k per second. That's how much storage we have on our accounts. When I click refresh on my gmail screen, the percent used thing matches how much it says we are allowed. Right now it's at 1149 megabytes.

I am guessing that it will top out at 2000 MB at the end of April 1st California time and then slowly inch its way up from there. I don't care to do the calculation to see if that makes sense, but, that's my guess.

This is taken from their front page.

On the eve of Gmail's one-year birthday, our engineers were toiling away furiously. Notes scribbled all over the walls. Complex calculations on napkins and empty pizza boxes. Millions of M&Ms.

The result?... starting today, we're beginning the roll-out of our new and top secret Infinity+1 storage plan. The key features are:

  • Write, don't worry.
You want to stop caring about storage. We want to keep giving you more. Today, and beyond.

  • The gift that keeps on giving.
Over 1000 megabytes of storage (and counting) for every user.

  • No complicated equations. No tough algorithms.
    Just this one graph:

Gmail turns 1 today. And we've always loved a good joke. We know we won't reach infinity, but check out what we will do ...

And where it says "Over 1000" above, it's zipping right along on their site. 1161 megs now.

On the "what we will do" page:

G is for growth
Storage is an important part of email, but that doesn't mean you
should have to worry about it. To celebrate our one-year birthday,
we're giving everyone one more gigabyte. But why stop the party
there? Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by
giving you more space as we are able. We know that email will only
become more important in people's lives, and we want Gmail to keep up
with our users and their needs. From Gmail, you can expect more.

Good job, gmail. I'm really really happy with this.

And, I'm really really even happier that recently gmail allows me to write in Japanese! Before last week, I could write in Japanese, but it would only send gibberish to whoever read it. Now it's legible. Whoo!

6:16pm

This is money.

In the amount of time it took me to read David Pogue's intial review of gmail from last year, my quota has gone up to 1170 megs. In the time it took me to write this sentence, 1171 megs.

Kellie told me she couldn't get gmail to work for some reason, but she got 1 gig of free email via torrentreactor.net (I think), so I scoped their site and started to download a southpark episode, and Jackie was like, "don't bother; I have all of the episodes on CD," and she brought them to my room. Like a stack of 40 discs with 4 episodes on each one. Nice. I watched one and Hitomi and I watched 2 and then Jasmine came home!

zz jasmine

1:02am JST Saturday 02 April 2005

Jasmine has arrived back safely from her adventures in Kyoto. She said they rode bicycles and had a lovely time, which I think janette and I would have enjoyed doing the time we went to Kyoto. Walking just took forever and bussing is rather expensive. But we had big fun.

Anyway, Jasmine had big fun too, but felt a little bit stomach achey slash tired and came back today. She figured out that she didn't have to go all the way to Tokyo station, but could get off at Shinagawa and get home more quickly. Good work!

Hitomi and I wanted chocolate so I asked Jasmine if she wanted anything from the conveni and she was like, "I wanna go" and she wanted to run, and I was like "booo" cause my knees don't like running, so she ran while Hitomi and I took Mimibike.

Watched a bit of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on TV after a bit of 90210, which I had to have Jen identify for me ("you're kidding, right?" (not kidding)) and we basically fell asleep watching the movie. Bedtime.
