Entries this day: dream-train-with-broken-rails-to-eduardo-birthday rain-for-days walking-meditation-walkshop-saturday-october-24th worked-on-ab-all-day-yesterday dream train with broken rails to eduardo birthday Lin and I were looking out the window, wondering if the morning train would go by. There had been a big storm so there was some concern if the trains would run. I saw two maintenance trucks go by on the train tracks and then I realized that we were on the train and I could look down and see the rails ahead of us. The rail stopped after a while and the train continued along the path it should go, guided by the time honored direction of the tracks. Then there were new anti-tracks that have been put into place which allowed the train to get back onto the tracks. The new tracks looked like steel plating and started in the middle of the tracks causing the wheels to be forced in the right direction by straddling the metal. It wasn't clear to me how it could work but it seemed to work okay and we arrived at our destination. I jumped off the train all happily asking the first guy I saw if I could help. He was preparing some food and said I could help by wishing happy birthday to hey man named Romano inside. He corrected the name to Eduardo and then I went inside to find him. There were a few people and I knew some of them, so I deduced that this other guy must be the right person. I was like hey happy birthday Romano, and he was like thanks but my name's not Romano. "Oh sorry I mean Eduardo," I corrected myself. His face lit up and he was so surprised that the message had gotten to him. He thanked me profusely and I said it was just a small thing and the least I could do. Then we got into a discussion of whether it's good to make a big deal out of people's birthdays and how to really know if that's what they want or not. Even if we ask them they might say one thing and really mean another. permalinkrain for days For the past few years I realized rainy season in Japan just merges smoothly with typhoon season so we just get rain for 6 (?) months or so. A few weeks ago I had scheduled a walking meditation event for this weekend. A few days ago I postponed it for 2 weeks because we're expecting to get rain all weekend. I'm glad I made a choice to postpone the event a few days ago and let everybody know about the new date instead of the old version of me waiting until the last minute hoping the rain would go away and then panic canceling or confusingly not canceling for people who like rain and it would just be really weird. permalinkwalking meditation walkshop saturday october 24th enjoy getting out into nature and get in touch with yourself during our walking meditation walkshop Saturday October 24th. We will meet in Shinjuku Gyoen, Shinjuku Gate at noon, enter the park and find a nice place to mindfully walk in the grass. The gardens are beautifully manicured and the grass is really nice for walking barefoot, so feel free to take off your shoes and enjoy being in touch with Mother Earth. I will need us through some mindfulness exercises as we move, slowly experiencing what it's like to walk. Cost: 500 yen to enter the park. permalinkworked on ab all day yesterday Yesterday I pretty much worked on AB all day and logged about 6 hours of payable time. The request is to fix the trend reports from timing out, as the historical data has gotten larger for the 9 years that we've run the project, doing a report over all of their historical data often times out. So now I'm retooling the thing so that we have a class that keeps track of the progress of the report and runs one month at a time instead of trying to run everything at once. Last night I got to the point where I was too tired to really think properly so I'm glad I went to bed instead of trying to push forward and making bad decisions while programming. As I write this the next morning, there is uncommitted code on my local computer that is likely to get erased and written a new way. Basically I started to expand one class to do the work but I actually think it's a different class that should be split. Yeah, thinking about it now it's very clear that this new way is the right way to go. Basically I was thinking that some trend reports would use the old system and some would use the new system, but realistically I do not need to keep any of the old code because all trend reports will use the new system. I'm really enjoying being able to speak my journal entries into my phone. I still haven't fixed it so it goes to my live server immediately but it's much better. permalinkprev day next day |
